Mental Health and Gambling-Getting to Know the Relationship and Where to Find Help

A further search of the databases psycINFO, psycArticles and Academic Search Ultimate was conducted from July 2023 to September 2023. Search terms were categorised in to two groups, with results requiring one term from each; 1) problem gambling/problem-gambling/pathological gambling/pathological-gambling/gambling disorder/gambling-disorder, AND 2) prevalence/rate/frequency. Based on our results, frequent gambling was linked to the online mode, whereas versatile gambling habits (measured in terms of the number of gambling types engaged in) were linked to multimode gambling.

Inclusion criteria

Many gambling addicts will go into serious debt throughout the course of their addiction. Sadly, gambling addicts are 15 times more likely to commit suicide due to the consequences of their gambling addiction. Despite Nevada having the most casinos (thanks to Las Vegas), the state does not have the highest rates of gambling addiction. That unfortunate honor goes to Oklahoma, with 6.2% of its population having a gambling addiction.

  • The mean number of activities for those who had participated in gambling in the past 4 weeks was 2.4 activities.
  • Multimode gambling, on the other hand, appears to be characterized by an overall versatility of gambling participation in terms of channels, gambling products, and gambling settings (cf. Salonen et al. 2018).
  • However, India’s current legislative framework in relation to gambling is ridden with challenges including implementation barriers, outdated laws, and lack of regulation and control over gambling practices (Benegal, 2013).
  • Nearly half (48 percent) of participants aged 18 and over participated in any form of gambling in the past four weeks.

Convenience gambling settings have also been argued to cause less “environmental stress” to older gamblers than online environments where the information load is high (Finlay et al. 2006). Furthermore, older gamblers have more free time and also gamble more as a means to socialize (Tse et al. 2012). Younger generations are more familiar with online environments and interactive technology, and therefore possibly more attracted to online gambling (Pallesen et al. 2021; Hume and Sullivan Mort 2011). Online gambling may appear as a particularly attractive activity for young people owing to the increased accessibility of online gambling in the last decade and new products such as e-sports (King et al. 2020).

Socio-demographic factors were derived from Statistics Finland’s registers and recoded (Table 1). They included gender, age, educational level, employment status, and personal net income tertiles. Furthermore, the amount of income support, unemployment benefit and sickness allowance https://gameaviatorofficial.com/ were dichotomised (yes/no). In Finland, income support is a last-resort form of financial aid, which covers some of the basic necessities of life to individuals and families (Kela 2020). After that, income support and unemployment benefit variables were merged, while sickness allowance was merged with a disability pension variable. Until 2016, the Finnish gambling policy was based on a three-party monopoly system.

The Positive Impact of a Trauma Retreat on Mental Health and Resilience

EGMs and casino games make up over half of the Veikkaus gross gambling revenue (Nikkinen and Marionneau 2020). EGM gambling in Finland and elsewhere is also connected to elevated gambling harms (e.g., Sulkunen et al. 2019). The particularly harmful nature of land-based gambling in the Finnish context may therefore, at least partly, overshadow the harms of online and multimode gambling. Multimode gambling may also be linked to other addictive behaviors, such as alcohol consumption or smoking. Particularly alcohol consumption may be influenced by specific events such as jackpot wins, bonus features, or winning streaks in land-based conditions (cf. playing EGMs in casinos) (Tobias-Webb et al. 2019), but alcohol consumption may also be linked to online gambling. In Finnish population study (Edgren et al. 2017), online gamblers (including multimode gamblers) were more typically smokers and had risky alcohol consumption than land-based gamblers.

The connection between mental health and gambling

Despite these limitations, the findings of this meta-analysis offer valuable insights into the complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that shape gambling engagement and related harms. The observed geographical variations in age and gender effects, particularly the differing patterns in Asia and North America, underscore the influential role of cultural, ethnic, and environmental factors in shaping gambling behavior and problem gambling risk. These regional differences highlight the importance of adopting a nuanced, context-specific approach to understanding and addressing problem gambling. We conducted a systematic review for population-representative surveys of PG, with the criterion that they provided summary statistics of prevalence with respect to age and gender. From data extracted from these studies, we conducted meta-analyses of the relative risk (RR) of PG using mixed effects models that incorporated estimates of heterogeneity across studies.
